Whilst the church is very old, there are relatively few
headstones in the churchyard. The reasons for this are many, but
suffice to say the available space has been re-used over its
long history. Many old headstones lie around the edge of the
churchyard, showing that plots have been re-used, and the ground
level of the churchyard is nearly 1m (3ft) higher than the road
outside.There are a number of graves inside the church
itself. These will be transcribed as part of a future exercise:
please contact the webmaster if you have a specific question
about these.
The headstones in the churchyard are nearly all made from
Cotswold stone, a very soft form of limestone that breaks down
quickly. On many of the older headstones, the inscriptions are
nearly impossible to read. However, the following list was
compiled about 25 years ago and is the nearest thing we have to
a definitive list...
